SCVMM 2008 Quickstart Videos

Whilst doing some searching for an answer to a SCVMM error, I came across a blog post with links to short videos on SCVMM 2008 you may find of interest. Like some of the other system center videos, they are quite short and designed to get you up and running on SCVMM in just a few minutes.

In fact, this whole series is only about 45-50 minutes long. Details and links below...

Downloads from Live Meeting Content from Nov 2008 SC Virtual User Group Meeting

Just uploaded the raw wmv file from the November meeting. The raw feed takes a bit of searching if you want to see a particular session, but if you scroll to session 3 on R2, you can make out Baelson's demos on a large monitor (19"+). Will post Kevin's and Raphael's individual sessions a bit later, as they were really great.

Download the raw file of full session at the same URL:

Downloads of Live Meeting Video Content from Nov 2008 User Group Meeting

If you were unable to attend, we had some great presentations in the November meeting of the System Center Virtual User Group. We're in the process off breaking out the presentations into individual files. You'll find Baelson's session on Operations  Manager 2007 R2 -  Features and Fixes in the following folder (on Skydrive). The quality of the Live Meeting video is not great (so demos are grainy), but the decks and audio are good.

Live Meeting Problems - November SC Virtual User Group Meeting will be rescheduled

The System Center Virtual User Group meeting for today has been cancelled. Live Meeting support said they are experiencing some issues affecting a large number of customers with no ETA on the fix at the moment.

Since this problem prevents us from recording the sessions, we will have to reschedule. Will try to have updated meeting dates posted in the next 24-48 hours.

Recordings from last user group meeting...

We had some audio problems on the last meeting (due to how sessions were recorded). We're going to re-record a couple of these sessions (mine and Cameron's). You can actually read the content of Steve Rachui's session in his new TechNet article at System Center: Granular Targeting In Operations Manager 2007

Sorry for the inconvenience. Should have at least the SNMP session recorded and uploaded this week, and promise we'll get it right next meeting.

70-400 Exam Study Notes: Section 2D - Migrate a Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 Management Pack to System Center Operations Manager 2007

To make it easier to keep track of all the exam study notes published, we'll link to each post on the 70-400 Exam Study Guide here on the System Center Virtual User Group web site on the 70-400 Exam Study Guide Homepage. Watch the System Center Virtual User Group blog for regular updates

The supported method for migrating a management pack is using the MOM 2005 to Operations Manager 2007 Migration Tool. This tool provides the four options for converting a MOM 2005 MP to an OpsMgr 2007 compatible MP:

  • Convert MP from Live MOM 2005 Mgmt Group to Live OpsMgr 2007 Mgmt Group
  • Convert MP from Live MOM 2005 Mgmt Group to an unsealed OpsMgr 2007 MP file (xml)
  • Convert MP from MOM 2005 MP file (akm) to Live OpsMgr 2007 Mgmt Group
  • Convert MP from MOM 2005 MP file (akm) to an unsealed OpsMgr 2007 MP file (xml)

The tools requires the MOM 2005 UI to be loaded on the same Opsmgr 2007 MP

The Migration tool  does NOT require a live MOM 2005 management group

How to convert management packs for OpsMgr 2007 (without a live MOM 2005 management group)
http://www.systemcenterforum.org/how-to-convert-management-packs-for-opsmgr-2007-without-a-live-mom-2005-management-group/

The MOM 2005 MP to OpsMgr 2007 MP conversion process basically consists of three steps:

  1. The MOM 2005 akm file is converted to MOM 2005 xml
  2. The xml file is then converted to OpsMgr 2007 compatible xml format
  3. The OpsMgr 2007 xml is then verified to ensure it can be successfully imported

The steps in this process can be performed manually using 3 command line utilities:

  • The MP2XML.exe utility from the MOM 2005 Resource Kit can be used to convert the akm file to xml
  • The MPConvert.exe utility in the OpsMgr 2007 installation directory can be used to convert the MOM 2005 xml to OpsMgr 2007 compatible xml format
  • The MPVerify.exe utility in the OpsMgr 2007 installation directory can be used to validate the MP against the Opsmgr 2007 MP schema to ensure it can be imported successfully.
